DEVELOPING
The co-founder of the grass roots political movement known as Top Conservatives on Twitter (#TCOT) this morning said that members of #TCOT will coordinate project teams that are voluntarily organizing to help defeat incumbent Senators Harry Reid of Nevada, Barbara Boxer of California, and Chris Dodd of Connecticut.
According to Michael Patrick Leahy,
"#TCOT is a conservative grass roots movement. We have no formal organization at present. We're a list of over 1,600 conservatives who use Twitter. We're a hashtag (#TCOT) that's used to follow conservative conversations on Twitter. We're a developing community of common interest that seeks to restore limited government to the United States."
"We're not a Political Action Committee, or even a non-profit corporation, though efforts are under way shortly to explore which organizational structure would be best suited for us to advance the conservative agenda within the current structure of rules and laws. It's my understanding that coordinating voluntary efforts through the use of social media is not an activity that requires FEC approval or any other legal authorization. If we find out otherwise, we will of course make sure that all laws are complied with."
"Our intention in announcing that we are targeting Boxer, Dodd, and Reid is to serve as a clearinghouse to connect like minded conservatives."
Monty Forthun, the Project Servant-Leader for Operation Conservative Republican Majority 2010, described the efforts as the 100/3 Plan.
"The plan is to organize local people in each of the 435 Congressional
Districts in the US. We are going to target 100 House Seats and as of about
five minutes ago, three Senate Seats. My broader vision though is to develop
an infrastructure of people that are tech-savvy that can help campaigns at
all levels when needed. For instance, when we put the group together and
find out that there's a special election in Vermont (or wherever) and they
need help with phone calls, we can send out some emails, texts, Tweets,
whatever and get a solid group of people to log into our website to get call
assignments, from home (as they used quite extensively in 2008 elections).
When they are finished with those, they can go back to others."
"
Or if we need
some help with a state-wide race or a local race, we'll have people
organized to do that. Our group will be connected with technology though, we
need to be able to get them quickly, not a series of phone calls or a set
time to meet or whatever. That will keep the group smaller, but it'll also
bring in a solid group of enthusiastic younger people. We need the youth
enthusiasm, we need the youth ideas and we need the youth spreading the word
to more youth. At the same time there are plenty of us in our 30s and 40s
and such that are well connected, so it's not like we are going to forget
them."
"I'd like to implement a "Get Three" program where everyone is responsible
for getting three more individuals that are interested in helping and are
connected. Ambitious, but essential to empower others to fill the seats,
so-to-speak. I doubt I've said anything new here, but TCOT has grown to
nearly 2,000 members in a month, just think what will happen if we all start
reaching out behind Twitter and engaging our friends and colleagues. There
are a lot of disenfranchised Republicans out there right now, we need to
step in right now with a positive attitude with confidence and conviction
and show them that we aren't going away. It's time to get up from the
beating we took, regroup and recharge."
Members of the #TCOT list responded enthusiastically to the prospects that Reid, Boxer, and Dodd can be defeated in 2010.
Nevada resident @Timaay said "My Senator, Harry Reid, barely won the last election, by less than 300
votes. Next election he is very vulnerable."
#TCOT Project Servant-Leader for Operation Big Tent, @cehwiedel commented on the issue. "Hubris will make Reid, Dodd and Boxer vulnerable in 2010."
@wodego feels that "Harry Reid is vulnerable because he's the quintessential
'angry old man.' Many Americans can't relate to his mean spirit."
@theforumblog agrees, saying "Reid is the most vulnerable of the three."
@irishspy considers Barbara Boxer vulnerable. "The only reason Boxer has won is that the
California Republican Party ran very weak candidates against her."
Glenn Reynolds, the well known University of Tennessee law professor and blogger at @instapundit is showing some very good evidence, however, that Senator Dodd's apparent mortgage self dealings may make him the most vulnerable of the three.
Sharon Day, Candidate for RNC Secretary and National Committeewoman from Florida, responds, "This a great start...can we add Nancy Pelosi to the list?"
