Email from Linda Rutherford, Vice President of Communications and Strategic Outreach, Southwest Airlines, to a concerned customer. Wednesday, June 17, 2009, 8:32 AM Dear Bill: Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns with us regarding the David Letterman show and the controversial comments that were made on June 8, 2009. While Southwest Airlines did have national advertisements running during the Letterman hour the week of June 1-5 and some local advertisements the week of June 8-12, we no longer have advertisements running at that time. Please understand that our advertisements are designed to reach our Customers, promote our low fares, and stimulate travel - a practice that is essential to keeping our Company financially viable for our 33,000 Employees and the traveling Customers who rely on our service every day. Our ads are in no way intended to be an endorsement of any particular show or TV personality. We hope these unusual circumstances will not prevent you from flying with us in the future. We truly appreciate your patronage, and hope we will see you onboard again very soon. Linda Rutherford Vice President, Communications and Strategic Outreach Southwest Airlines A subsequent email elaborated on the Southwest Airlines position Bill: No we are not buying advertisements in his show any longer. We no longer have advertisements running on the show. We had bought all major media, including CBS, to help launch our new advertising campaign "Grab Your Bag, It's On" in the hope of spurring the economy and getting people to fly again in these tough times. We are not running in his show, and have not been since June 12. I'm sorry if my previous reply to you was vague. Linda Rutherford Vice President, Communications and Strategic Outreach Southwest Airlines Editor's Note: Like Olive Garden, Southwest Airlines is not cancelling previously scheduled advertising on the Late Show. Unlike Olive Garden, Southwest Airlines has made a firm statement that it will no longer further advertise on the Late Show. Return to the TCOT Report
